Talent intelligence · Hospital for Special Surgery
Outflow by program
Everyone who has finished their HSS training, split by the first role they took afterward. Program sizes are on the right. Residents usually do one more fellowship, so their next role reads as more training.
Inflow
Residents are matched by the medical school on their profile. Fellows are matched by the residency they finished right before HSS. Affiliated hospitals are grouped under one name, so Brigham and Mass General sit together.
Outflow
Clinical trainees only, HSS itself left out. Bar color shows the kind of employer. Click a name in the flow above to see the people behind it.
Where they are now
Current location on each profile for everyone who has finished HSS training. New York leads, but the map shows how far the network reaches.
The internal pipeline
Counts of people whose own profile shows each step inside HSS. Research roles before residency include the medical student summer program, Leon Root fellowships and coordinator jobs.
Cohorts
The year each person started at HSS. Recent years run low on finished outcomes because those cohorts are still training. The 2026 count covers starts through October.

How this was built
Every profile was matched, merged and de-duplicated before anything was drawn. Live data replaced stored data wherever both existed.
Who is in it. Anyone whose profile shows a resident or fellow role at Hospital for Special Surgery starting January 2010 or later, plus current residents listed on hss.edu. Interns, coordinators, program directors and business fellowships are left out. Clinical fellowships shorter than four months are counted as visiting fellows.
Came from. For residents, the medical or PT school. For fellows, the residency right before HSS. For research fellows, the last role or program before HSS. Regions come from the role location, then the employer's headquarters.
Went to. The first substantive role that starts after a person's last HSS training stint, so a resident who then did an HSS fellowship is counted from the end of that fellowship. Advisory, board and volunteer roles are ignored.
Limits. People without a public profile are missing, and recent graduates sometimes update late, which shows up as "no later role listed". HSS takes about nine orthopaedic residents a year, so the residency count is a close check on coverage.
